Happy List! – April 5, 2011

Things that make me happy… RIGHT NOW!

The generosity that resides in a certain 7 year old.

My niece Alexa has been growing her hair since she sprouted those little whispy locks. Recently, and most likely also due at least in part to the pain of forever tangly hair, she has decided that she wants to donate her hair to Locks of Love. Besides, she’s reached her toddler goal of having hair “down to my hiney!” 🙂 I’m sure there will be some tears, from her mother mostly, but we are so proud of her! (She’s growing it just a little longer to make a beautiful wig for a child who has lost their hair due to cancer/alopecia/other medical condition.)

Tonight, I started to tell her a little about Reece’s Rainbow, the orphan ministry I highlighted in the Happy List a few nights back. She was very sad for the children with Down Syndrome who had yet to find families. She asked if there was any way we could help them. I told her that I thought about possibly making something to sell on etsy or locally in order to fundraise for the children’s adoption funds. She suggested we make friendship bracelets (her newest skill). I had come up with a new bracelet design which incorporates elements of basic friendship bracelet design, so I quickly agreed that this would be a GREAT idea! In my previous post about Reece’s Rainbow, I linked a picture of my little angel, Bridget, the little girl who has captured my heart and that I would love more than anything to give a forever home to though I know that it is just not yet the time for me. I have contacted Reece’s Rainbow and asked if we can start our own “Bracelets for Bridget” campaign. It may be a small effort, but every little bit helps!

Songs with good messages for growing girls

Alexa loves to sing. She sings anything and everything. Luckily she only knows the clean version of CeeLo’s FORGET You. 😉 Tonight she sang loud and proud along with Selena Gomez who was a special guest entertainer on Dancing with the Stars. You have to love lyrics like this coming out of a 7 year old girl’s mouth:

Who says
Who says you’re not perfect
Who says you’re not worth it
Who says you’re the only one that’s hurting
Trust me
That’s the price of beauty
Who says you’re not pretty
Who says you’re not beautiful

This is exactly what I need to be listening to, HEARING and taking to heart right now. I’ve been knocked down far too many times, even by people I’ve loved and who I thought loved me. Instead of wallowing in defeat, I need to take more of a “who says” attitude myself. Thank you tween Disney. 😉

Find inspiration in the most unlikely of places, and keep thinking of the things that make YOU smile! 🙂
