Happy List! – April 4, 2011

Things that make me happy… RIGHT NOW!

– Quality Lego time. Ordinarily, as fun as it is to teach with Legos, when I get home, I need some down time. Think about it. Dealing with 15-20 kids sorely needing to let off after school steam takes a LOT of effort, no matter how well-behaved and creative they are. So normally the Legos stay put in my car until the next go round. Tonight Alexa asked if I would teach her a certain project that she knew the kids get excited about. I started to grumble, for just a moment, and then took a moment to realize how it must feel to have an aunt who teaches other kids LEGOs but is too tired to have fun with her when she got home. I quickly turned that choice around, dug out the pieces we needed and got to building. She played for over an hour, seriously getting into creating a monorail vehicle that would defeat my own. Multiple weapons of mass destruction… of the Lego kind, of course… were created. Hidden compartments made their way onto her creation. Her imagination was flowing; it was a sad, sad, event when bedtime rolled around. I’ll have to make it a point to play more at home.

– Start of a new term! New students, new locations, new parents… or are they? Today I was met in my new class at a new school by an “old” student from the camp where I originally trained. This kid is a 5 year old Lego genius; I can’t wait for him to unleash his creations in class! I am also making a triumphant return to two of my schools this term. I am anxious to see if any of the kids are repeats… for both good, and hesitantly optimistic, reasons! 😉

– Nanny’s homemade heat pack. I know that I’ve extolled the powers of homemade microwavable heat packs before, but this one takes the cake. Nanny made this one for me quite a number of years ago knowing how successful a smaller mass-produced neck sized one had been in easing my back pain. The problem was that the store bought one was too small. Enter Nanny. Her creation is a good 14×16 inches… enough to cover my entire lumbar region with room to spare. Perfection. (Plus, it does double duty as a bedwarmer on those unbearably freezing nights!)

Make time for those who love you, and keep thinking of the things that make YOU smile! 🙂
