Happy List! – April 3, 2011 (Reece’s Rainbow Edition!)

Things that make me happy… RIGHT NOW!

Celebrities who use their name, fame and fan base for GOOD. I have been so impressed by several instances of this that I’ve come across this week that I’m dedicating tonight’s Happy List to a charity which has become very dear to my own heart that I only recently discovered due in great part to the generosity of a particular celebrity.

Reece’s Rainbow

Reece’s Rainbow is an international orphan ministry which provides advocacy, birth family support and adoption grants to benefit orphaned children with Down Syndrome. Families affected by Down Syndrome have always held a special place in my heart. My sister’s childhood friend has a younger brother, my own brother’s age, who has Down Syndrome. We grew up with that family watching the joys, and struggles, of raising a child with Down’s. Quite a few years later down the road, after several lives in other professional fields and locales, I returned to university to obtain a degree in Special Education (now Exceptional Student Education). In both of my teaching internships, I was blessed to teach a number of children with Down Syndrome. My days were often a challenge but ALWAYS a joy. The love that these children have and express is truly extraordinary.

This week, I noticed a tweet on my Twitter timeline from former Everybody Loves Raymond and current The Middle star Patricia Heaton (@PatriciaHeaton) about Reece’s Rainbow. This was actually the first I had heard of the ministry. As I continued to read the tweets and retweets from Patricia, my eyes started to well up. Patricia Heaton has agreed to donate $1 for every twitter follower of Reece’s Rainbow up to $10,000. The generosity and advocacy of celebrities towards chosen charities that I find on twitter never ceases to amaze me; this particular cause has really touched my heart.

If you have your own little branch on the twitter tree, please consider giving @ReecesRainbow a follow.

Take a few minutes to visit their website (Reece’s Rainbow) and read about the little angels that need, and deserve, a home and family.

There already is a certain little angel that has grabbed hold of my heart. Hopefully, in the coming year(s), I will be in a place of enough security to adopt one of Reece’s Rainbow’s little angels. Until then, I will do my best to find ways to advocate for them and spread their own message of unconditional love and joy.

Celebrate a charity that touches your heart, and keep thinking of the things that make YOU smile! 🙂
