Happy List! – March 23, 2011

Things that make me happy… RIGHT NOW!

– I can barely keep my eyes open… at 10pm! It’s a miracle. My insomnia and winter work schedule had reset my internal clock for LATE nights and sleeping in. (After the school drop off, that is.) Teaching camp this week (in the morning) has whipped my bum back to a professional day schedule. One more week, and then my preferred night owl routine will kick back in. Maybe.

– New, kid euphemisms. Today I learned about “trick food.” I wasn’t sure I was hearing the adorable imp correctly, but after repeating himself 3 times, he went ahead to explain further. “I went to this place called Carl’s Jr., and they serve trick food!!! You know, trick food. It looked REALLY good, but then I ate it, and it was really gross.” I couldn’t stop laughing for about 5 minutes. Trick food. 🙂

– Having kids cheer when I announce the project for the day. Especially when it is really something very simple. Watching the kids fly their airplanes through the air with their hands and make jetways and restaurants for our class airport with so much energy and imagination really made my heart sing. They were so excited and proud of what they had accomplished. I even let them keep our airport up for a few extra minutes to show their parents, even though it would prove to be a tough and chaotic cleanup. Regardless, I found that I couldn’t stop smiling… even if cleanup took a little longer than usual.

Have the joy of a child once in a while, and keep thinking of the things that make YOU smile! 🙂

  1. Happy thing today: Sun showers! I am generally pretty rigid in my weather likes and dislikes. I like warm and sunny. I HATE rain and cold. But today’s on-again-off-again rainy pattern proved kind of exciting… it was very sunny and bright outside when I looked out the big storefront window. Literally a few second later, I heard a downpour, and looked back up to see the sun still pouring in, but sideways sheet of rain coming down. I even ran outside to look for a rainbow (couldn’t find one). I came back in, and in less than 5 minutes, the rain had stopped and the sidewalk started drying again. So crazy! I guess it was just a little cloud-burst, but something about it kind of captured me and made me smile 🙂

    • One of my happiest weather memories is getting off the subway in NYC in 50 degree weather in the morning and later looking out the big front windows at silver dollar sized snowflakes falling outside at lunchtime. The office radiators made the loft space nice and toasty; to watch the wintery scene out the window in such a cozy environment was beautiful. Plus, it didn’t hurt that by the time the day was over, it was back in the 50s again. 🙂
